Vitamin C treatment shows cancer promise

As Sandy Kellar battles ovarian cancer, she's noticing an unusual vitality in herself that she doesn't see in others with the disease.

“I can be a grandma and play with those grandkids in the backyard and anything I want," the Overland Park resident said.

Kellar attributes her energy to her twice-weekly intravenous vitamin C treatments, a therapy that is gaining followers and spurring new research, including a trial at Kansas University Medical Center.

Jeanne Drisko, medical director for the KU Medical Center's Program in Integrative Medicine, is in the process of completing a multiyear, $375,000 trial of intravenous vitamin C in ovarian cancer patients. The study is funded by the Cancer Treatment Research Foundation, a nonprofit agency based in Schaumburg, Ill.

The study began in 2002 and enrolled its last patient in 2005.

Vitamin C Acts As Anti-inflammatory Agent

Cardiovascular disease is a common chronic disease and the leading cause of death in the United States, although the rates have declined in the past 25 years. In the past, cardiovascular disease was thought to be caused by diet alone, but today health experts are beginning to realize that it is in part due to inflammation of blood vessel walls, according to LSU AgCenter nutritionist Dr. Heli Roy.This inflammation can cause scarring, hardening of arteries and plaque formation. When there is inflammation during illness or infection, it is treated with anti-inflammatory agents such as aspirin. Anti-oxidants can reduce inflammation of the vessel wall as well, Roy points out. Some of the common antioxidants are vitamins C, A and E.Vitamin C is a water-soluble antioxidant present in fruits and vegetables.

Problem Solvent

In April, Christopher Crowley, executive vice president and treasurer of Polar Beverages, was informed that class-action lawsuits had been filed against his family's business in Massachusetts and Florida. The charge? That Polar's Diet Orange Dry soda contained dangerous levels of benzene, a chemical compound that has been linked to acute myelogenous leukemia and other ailments.

Crowley was shocked, but a month later, he got some good news. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration confirmed what Polar had already found in its independent testing: the soda contained less than 1 part per billion of benzene. That's akin to "one small drop of water in an Olympic-size pool," an FDA official noted. To reach the dangerous levels asserted in the lawsuits — 9.1 parts per billion, well above the federal safe drinking water standard of 5 parts per billion — the beverage had to be heated to a temperature high enough to cause a chemical reaction between ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) and the preservative benzoate salt.

The Medical Minute: Medical myths, part 3

Myths and tall tales are part of every civilization so it stands to reason there would be many related to medicine. Here are more medical myths: "Vitamin C prevents colds." Linus Pauling, a Nobel Prize winning chemist, was a major proponent of the idea that vitamin C prevents colds. Even top scientists can be wrong. In fact, vitamin C in megadoses proposed by its advocates can be harmful in some cases. Vitamin C is essential for tissue integrity and proper functioning of many organ systems and is an antioxidant, but multiple studies have shown no benefit for preventing colds. Possible explanations for those who believe it really helps them are that people who take extra vitamin C every day also may be paying closer attention to taking care of themselves and naturally have fewer colds. Another possibility is the placebo effect -- if we really believe it will work, it does.

Tony Tantillo: Yellow Watermelon

This weeks tip is going to be with Yellow Watermelon. Dont forget to try the recipe for Watermelon and Hearts of Palm Tower with Watermelon Salad Dressing.Hey, we do a lot of tips on red watermelon, but its been a long time since Ive done a tip on yellow melon. Theyre beautiful inside and not only that, theyre a little bit milder and they have less acidity then red melons. Their nutritional value is even a little bit better. Theres more vitamin C in them then in the red melon, but you have to select them and store them right. When selecting your yellow watermelon, like all melons, you want to make sure theyre heavy for their size. When theyre heavy for their size that means theyre packed with sugar. When they are light, that means a thick rind and not a lot of sugar in there, and thats not a good thing.
