European Companies to Unveil Food Labels

European food and drink firms said Monday they would introduce voluntary guidelines to show shoppers how much fat, fiber, sugar and carbohydrates are packed into the food they buy -- part of an EU push against obesity.

The Confederation of the Food and Drink Industries in Europe said it would recommend that its members clearly display -- on the front of every pack -- the calories per serving and what percentage the portion comprises of what an average adult should eat every day.

More detailed information on the back should list the guideline daily amounts for "public-health sensitive nutrients" such as energy, fat, saturated fat, sugars and sodium or salt.

The labels will list the amount of energy, protein, carbohydrate, sugars, fat, saturated fat, fiber and sodium or salt.

Making a mark in Columbia

Adam Lincoln's use of ink might not compare with Gutenberg's printing, John Hancock's signature or the kinky head games you can play with a Rorschach ink blot.

Nevertheless, when Lincoln got a tribal-design tattoo on his right arm Monday, it was historic in a way: his first tattoo in Columbia's first licensed tattoo shop.

"I've been wanting this since I was 18 years old, and I'm 28 now," said Lincoln, an industrial electrician from Pelion.

It seems many in the Midlands share his eagerness to decorate themselves with body art that's expensive, a little bit painful and guaranteed to upset their mothers.

"We haven't even advertised yet, and we've already done 25," Stan Hudgins, co-owner of Five Points Custom Tattoo, said before opening at noon Monday.

LETTERS TO THE GREEN

Editor -- Contrary to what some of the sportswriters and national and local sports talk host think, I am enjoying every minute of the World Cup competitions. It doesn't matter to me if it is a 0-0 draw between Mexico and Angola, or players dive and flop trying to win a game, or if referees issued two many yellow and red cards or blew a call.

It's the World Cup, it happens only every four years, with the best players and the most fit athletes (tell David Wells to run up and down the field for 45 minutes with Ronaldo or Rooney hanging on to him) on the same stage. It takes two years to go through the qualifying rounds. And only 16 percent of the countries (32 out of 200) make it to the World Cup tournament. That would come out to five teams going to the playoffs for baseball, basketball and football in the United States each year.
